Bear Creek Restoration
This project will restore 8 miles of aquatic and riparian habitat along Bear Creek by installing 500 instream structures (Post-assisted log structures, and Beaver Dam Analogs), 50,000 riparian plants, and 2,000 key pieces of large wood. These efforts aim to improve in-stream complexity, floodplain connectivity, riparian function, groundwater recharge, and channel aggradation.
Primary species that will benefit include Winter Steelhead, Fall Chinook, and Coho; secondary species include Pacific Lamprey, Cutthroat Trout, and others. Bear Creek, a major NFT tributary above the Sediment Retention Structure and a drop point for transported fish, currently runs dry in summer, hindering riparian recovery in the lahar zone.
The project emphasizes planting and flow-slowing structures to retain water on the landscape, with the goal of restoring year-round flow and enhancing overall ecosystem function.
